After spending a while in my TBR stack, I finally decided to read this short story. This is my first story from this author but what convinced me to read it was the military aspect, I’m not tired of that yet. Marceline Bellini and Aaron Robinson have known each other for years, about 10, and he’s had a thing for her for quite a few of those years. It turns out that she’s had a thing for him too but know that she wasn’t in his league so after the high school fantasies wore off she decided to move on. That’s how she ended up with a daughter for a man who left her probably after the pregnancy began.
I’ve not read any of the other stories in this series and there might be things that I’m missing. Marcy and Aaron’s story as a couple happened quickly. After a few drinks at a bar, I hate when the drunk excuse is used to explain stupid, Marcy and Aaron have sex in the alleyway behind the bar. That’s not something I’ve ever thought was either romantic or sexy…then their next encounter, they have sex in the broom closet at the elementary school where she’s a teacher and he’s there as a police officer telling the kids about being a police officer. I know I’m supposed to like the erotic nature of that but is that really erotica for gratuitous sex?
This story was short on plot and character development but long on the sex scenes. I didn’t care for Marcy because you can’t really tell me that you live for your child and behave in such a reckless manner. I’m not sure what getting to know each other was ever a part of the few conversations they had.
I didn’t care for Aaron because you can’t really tell me that you’re wanting to romance this single mother of a 3 year-old. A woman you’ve know for years. A woman who you know was left by the father of her child. I didn’t understand why he would behave in such a reckless manner – and you’re a police officer, do what they all do – find a room with four walls! Like I said – this was really short on character development.
